Day 1 – Flights to Lisbon

Overnight flights to Lisbon, Portugal

Day 2 – Lisbon, Portugal

On arrival, we head out on a city tour of Lisbon seeing sites such as the Belém Tower, the Monument to the Discoveries, including a tour of the Jeronimos Monastery, a true masterpiece of Manueline architecture. Of course, the tour would not be complete without trying one of the 7 gastronomic wonders of Portugal, a ‘Pastel de Belém’!  Later in the evening, join the group for a Tapas-Style Welcome Dinner, one of the many things Portugal is famous for!

Day 3 – Sintra - Rock Cape - Cascais - Estoril

After breakfast, head out to Sintra, a city full of lush natural beauty, it is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO because of its numerous palaces, quintas (estates) and the abundance of beautiful vegetation. During our stop we tour the Royal Palace of Sintra, once the summer residence of Portuguese royalty. Saying good-bye to Sintra, we stop at the westernmost point of Continental Europe – Cabo Da Roca (Rock Cape). We then continue along the coastal road stopping at Cascais, a traditional fishing port, and Estoril, a fine sandy beach town well known for its lively entertainment.

Day 4 – Lisbon to Évora

This morning we depart Lisbon and head to Évora. You will quickly find out why it is an UNESCO World Heritage Site, as it seduces you with its Moorish character of its narrow streets and white houses. During a tour within the walls of Évora, you will discover the Cathedral of Évora which dominates the skyline, giving you unparalleled 360-degree views. Visit a classic Roman era Temple and the St. Francis Church which houses a chapel lined with thousands of human bones and skulls. The rest of the afternoon and evening is yours to explore the unique city centre.

Day 5 – Azaruja - Estremoz

After breakfast head to Azaruja to visit a cork factory to discover the several uses of cork, one of the most exported Portuguese products.  After, we travel to Estremoz, the “White City” of Alentejo. The nickname comes from not only the white houses that dot the hill, but also from the deposits of white marble. Visiting one of the many marble quarries seeing firsthand the process of marble extraction. Then making our way to the city centre where you will likely catch a glimpse of the countless handcrafted colourful figurines that Estremoz is known for.

Day 6 – Évora to Tomar

Today we depart Évora and make our way to Tomar. Stopping in Óbidos, a charming medieval town considered to be one of the most picturesque and well preserved in all of Portugal. Enjoy a tasting of Ginjinha served in a chocolate glass! A traditional drink developed in 1840 which the Portuguese are very fond of. Continuing our journey, we stop at Fátima, to visit a famous religious & pilgrimage site in the Christian world. After checking into our hotel in Tomar, we make our way to a medieval-style dinner.

Day 7 – Tomar to Porto

Before departing Tomar, immerse yourself in what once was the former seat of the Order of the Knights Templar, a city of great charm for its artistic and cultural wealth, whose greatest expression is in the Convent of Christ, one of the masterpieces of the Portuguese Renaissance. This fortress, classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, sits on a hilltop overlooking the town of Tomar. After, we stop at Coimbra, the medieval capital of Portugal for over a hundred years and is home to the University of Coimbra, the highest ranked in the country. Tour the beautiful historic core that cascades down a hillside with its multi-coloured collage of buildings that span nearly a millennium before finishing todays journey in Porto.

Day 8 – Porto

Spend today getting an in-depth look at the city of Porto. One of the oldest cities in Europe, its famous bridges have inspired many artists – including Gustave Eiffel, and the brightly coloured glazed-tile facades of its old town helped propel Porto into becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site. During our tour, we stop for an unforgettably unique visit to the century old Lello & Irmão Bookstore, ranked the third most beautiful library in the world! With its neo-gothic façade, which is only surpassed by its stunning interior, it is said that this is where J.K. Rowling got her inspiration to write Harry Potter. After, we visit the Stock Exchange Palace and view its impressive Arab Room, considered to be the jewel of the Palace. Later in the evening, join the rest of the group for a private dinner.

Day 9 – Porto – Embarkation Day

Today we board our home for the next seven days, the AmaWaterways AmaDouro. Built in 2019, the AmaDouro features spacious, elegantly appointed staterooms, most of which include balconies to take in views of the breathtaking hills and terraced vineyards along the river. The AmaDouro’s panoramic lounge is a stylish and enticing space to enjoy a glass of wine or a cocktail along with nightly entertainment. The ship features many amenities, such as a massage room, fitness room, sundeck, swimming pool and so much more. In the evening, join the group and the rest of the ship for a Welcome Champagne Reception and Gala Dinner.

Day 10 – Porto - Entre-os-Rios - Régua

Begin your day with a tour of the 18th century Palacio Anadia, or Palace of the Counts, known for its beautiful interior and Baroque style. Inside the house, you’ll see intricate panels of blue and white tiles throughout the rooms and a striking vaulted ceiling that retell the history behind the palace.

Day 11 – Régua - Pinhão

Travel to the picturesque Lamego, home to another important pilgrimage site, where you’ll go to the Nossa Senhora dos Remédios (Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies). The shrine features a staircase of nearly 700 steps, beautifully decorated with white and blue tiles. You can sample local traditional specialties, such as bolas de Lamego, bread filled with smoked ham; presunto, a type of dry-cured ham; and Espumante, a Portuguese sparkling wine. You’ll then go to the formal Episcopal Palace Museum. Later in the day, savor the flavours of Portugal’s renowned fortified wine, vinho do porto, made exclusively in the Douro Valley.

Day 12 – Vega de Terrón, Spain – Salamanca

Drive to Salamanca, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built of golden sandstone, Salamanca is known as a “living museum”, and you will step back in time to the Middle Ages during your tour, which includes the cities elegant university buildings, the New Cathedral, the intriguingly decorated House of Shells and Plaza Mayor.

Day 13 – Barca d’Alva

Spend time soaking up the beauty of the Douro River as you cruise to Barca d’Alva, where you will visit Castelo Rodrigo, a small, fortified village perched high on a hilltop with centuries-old walls, steep narrow streets and fantastic views. While here, taste some delicious locally grown produce. Be treated to an exclusive dinner at Quinta da Avessada, where you’ll enjoy an authentic and traditional dining experience complete with entertainment.

Day 14 – Entre-os-Rios

Entre-os-Rios translates to “between the rivers”, and this small village is, quite appropriately, located at the confluence of the Támega and Douro rivers. This tranquil village offers an authentic slice of Douro River life. In the afternoon, indulge in a traditional Portuguese lunch with your fellow travellers in Entre-os-Rios at a local quinta – a country estate – for a truly authentic culinary experience.

Day 15 – Porto

The colourful city of Porto blends the best of old and new, which you can discover on an escorted tour of the historic quarter, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, including the Porto Cathedral, one of the cities oldest monuments; and the Sao Bento Railway Station, known for its blue and white tile panels depicting scenes from Portuguese history. You’ll also enjoy a tasting of Port, Portugal’s most renowned contribution to the world of wine. In the evening, join the Captain for a Farewell Champagne Reception and Gala Dinner.

Day 16 – Porto to Home Cities

Today we say farewell to the country we have spent so much time exploring, and to all our friends we have made along the way.
