Via Rail

Known as the polar bear and beluga whale paradise, Churchill is sure to give you an unforgettable experience. Enjoy unparalleled northern landscapes on board the train, the only dry land connection to this remarkable community.

Beluga Whale Watching Tour

This tour is a favourite for many as you get an hour of interacting with our beautiful beluga whales and also see an important part of Canada’s history at the Prince of Wales Fort.

Watch as belugas surround your boat, knowing that the experienced guides and special safety features of the boat ensure that even the most curious belugas will remain unharmed.

Then the tour docks at the Fort which is rich in history and timeless beauty. Step inside to admire the strength of this stone structure that has been standing guard for 250 years at the mouth of the Churchill River. What used to be a bustling hub for fur traders was later reinvented into a stone fortification when peace was threatened between England and France. There was a strong desire to control Hudson Bay’s resources and the Prince of Wales Fort had the most advantageous position for defence. Take a trip back in time through the ruins of the fort that took 40 years to build under the harsh survival conditions of the Arctic.

Polar Rover Tour

Explore the Churchill Wildlife Management Area in our luxurious Polar Rover. These vehicles are heated, wheelchair accessible, reclining seats, easily opened windows and have comfortable washrooms with flush toilets. All our vehicles have outdoor grated see-through decks and the vehicle height is designed to ensure passenger safety and comfort.

Because of the unique requirements to keep people safe from the polar bears yet enable them to safely view the polar bears, these vehicles have to be custom built for both rough terrain travel and passenger comfort. They are designed and constructed in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada by Don Walkoski.

Although massive, our Polar Rovers put down a low 4lbs per square inch in ground pressure minimizing damage to the fragile arctic landscape which is due to the large tires that we use. The machines burn an average of 12-15 gallons of fuel per day because of the low gear ratios and small 210 hp diesel engines that power the vehicle.

**There is only a 25% chance of seeing polar bears at this time of year

Churchill Town & Area Tour

Join your local guide and get to know the Town of Churchill and surrounding area. On this tour you'll visit Cape Merry, Miss Piggy, the Polar Bear Jail and the Churchill Northern Studies Centre. Make sure to keep a lookout for wildlife (there is only a 25% chance of seeing polar bears this time of year).
