Reykjavik to Laugarbakki

We start our journey to Iceland in the great lava fields of the Reykjanes Peninsula where the International airport is situated and then make our way passed Reykjavik to the town of Borgarnes.

We will travel through the Borgarfjörður area to the amazing Hraunfossar waterfalls, formed by rivulets streaming over a distance of about 900 metres. From there we will see the great hot spring of Deildartunguhver,  and then travel north across Holtavörðuheiði to Hotel Laugarbakki.

Laugarbakki to Akureyri

Today we travel through the farmland of Húnavatnssýsla to the Skagafjðrður Heritage Museum at Traditonal Turf Farm Glaumbær where we also have lunch.

We will then travel through the mountains to Eyjafjörður and go whale watching at our final destination for the day, Akureyri, the capitol of the north. Tonight we will stay at the centrally located Hotel Norðurland.

Today we travel alongside Eyjafjörður and then head to the great Goðafoss (waterfall of the gods). From there we make our way out to the coast again, stopping in the old fishing village of Húsavík. We travel out to the Tjörnes peninsula just a few miles south of the arctic circle, and then to the horse-shoe shaped geological formation at Ásbyrgi. It is said that Odin´s eight-legged horse Sleipnir once touched down here. Finally we make our way to Mývatn, where we spend the night at Hotel Gígur, right next the pseudo-craters of Skútustaðir.

Lake Myvatn to Egilsstadir

Today we enjoy the volcanic region of Mývatn, visiting the great lava field Dimmuborgir and the Námaskarð hot springs. We’ll make our way to the magnificent waterfall Dettifoss and the breathtaking wastelands Fjöllin, which stretch almost all the way to Egilsstaður, where we will be staying for the night. We’ll overnight in the Lake Hotel on the banks of Lagarfljót glacial river, said to be the home of the great Wyrm (and there is $1 million króna reward out there for a photo of the legendary monster).

Today we travel through the Eastfjords of Iceland. With its rugged coastline and wild mountains, you will undoubtedly be fixated on the incredible scenery as we pass through Reyðarfjörður, Stöðvarfjörður, Berufjörður and Djúpivogur. We'll also visit the fascinating Petra´s mineral collection and grab lunch at Hotel Bláfell in Breiðdalsvik. Tonight we'll stay at Hotel Vatnajökull.

Today we travel through Europe’s largest glacier, the massive Vatnajökul. We’ll take a cruise amidst the icebergs and sail over the breathtaking glacial lagoon. From there we’ll drive across the black sand deserts left in the wake of the volcanic glacier flooding. We will travel through the otherworldly Eldhraun lava fields towards Reynisdrangar, the great basalt columns. We will overnight in Vik at Hotel Katla in the foothills of the volcano.

Today we start by visiting the waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skogarfoss, situated in the foothills of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano. Afterwards we move on to the Golden Circle with lunch at the organic tomato greenhouse farm Friðheimar. We will also be visiting the Great Geysir, the massive waterfall Gullfoss, Þingvellir National Park and the Rift Valley, and we’ll finish the day off by making our way back to the capital city, Reykjavik.

Today we’ll take a City tour with an experienced local guide to see the highlights of Reykjavik. We’ll visit the main landmarks, such as The Pearl and Hallgrímskirkja Church. A tour where Reykjavík’s renowned charm and bustling life is brought to light. This afternoon the group visits one of the world’s twenty-five wonders, The Blue Lagoon.

You’ll have the night free to enjoy. Dinner on your own this evening.

Not everything in life is free, but during those rare times when something is… we ought to enjoy it. Our last full day in Iceland is yours to spend however you’d like!
